Retrospective of Mary Brown’s Embroidered Works from 2000 – 2019 – is an exhibition of fine embroidery by one of Australia’s internationally renowned embroiderers, Mary Brown.

The earliest works in Mary Brown’s retrospective embroidery exhibition are pieces that were create for an assessment at the Royal School of Needlework in the UK in 2000 and 2001. In 2007, Mary published a book internationally on Goldwork Embroidery. Along with a history of Goldwork in the West, for which she designed and worked on 15 projects for her book. A couple of these works are in this exhibition.

Other works in the exhibition have been in response to fashion, or are her take on medieval beliefs and culture. Mary also creates works that are just pure embellishment for fashion.

About Mary Brown

Mary Brown has had a visual arts background since graduating from the National Art School in 1969. She taught Visual Arts in Senior Secondary Colleges for more than two decades. In her own creative practice she painted and printed. Embroidery became of enormous interest to her once Art Wearables were introduced into the HSC Visual Arts syllabus. From 2007 to 2017 Mary was a sessional lecturer in the Fashion and Textile Department at University of Technology Sydney.
